This week, I’m excited to have Kate Westphal, co-founder of Grologo, “co-blogging” with me.
The rainy weather cleared up enough last Friday to hit downtown Madison in search of street fashions that reflect our weird-but-dear hometown. On our style adventure down State Street and around the capitol square, we found a few trends that have been seen on the runways, mixed with a bit of that “casual cool” feel that Madison does so well.
It’s no secret that leggings have been a mainstay of State Street fashion for quite some time. Even in the dead of winter, girls refuse to shed this staple for a warmer option. The trend started as the partner in crime to the UGG boot… but has stuck around and evolved as the seasons change. We found this lovely lady bringing her leggings into spring by pairing them with a green military-inspired jacket, a statement necklace, and a pair of brown boots.
Runway trend: Military inspired.
What we love: Mixing neutrals—brown, black and olive.
Here in Madison, hot mammas can be found all over town. Becoming a mom absolutely does not mean trading in your style or sexiness, though comfort may be more important than ever.
Runway trends: Stripes, black and white.
What we love: Wearing a bold print and heels when you are pregnant.
Madison musicians are some cool cats and this dashing man is no exception. His effortless look is the perfect balance of sophisticated and casual.
What we love: The tweed jacket (saxophone strap optional)… and have you ever seen a beret look so cool?
What you should try: Hats! They make you stand out in a crowd and add a bit of polish to any outfit (not to mention fix a bad hair day).
Did we mention the Madison ladies love their leggings? This time we are seeing them with a black t-shirt for a monochromatic look with a fun zipper detail on the side. Pairing them with Chuck Taylors gives instant street cred.
What we love: Girly pink Chucks with edgy chains and artistic tattoos.
What you should try: Juxtaposing girly and edgy in the same outfit; accessories are the easiest way to achieve this.
White polka-dot shorts are perfectly cute for a warm, sunny day in Madison. Wearing short-shorts on the bottom while covering up a bit on top with a long-sleeve tee and scarf keeps the outfit sophisticated. Top it off with some great accessories and you are out the door, looking polished.
What we love: Great accessories—metallic flat sandals, a bold scarf and bright yellow belt.
Tip: Don’t put away your scarves in the summer. Find one in a bright color or pattern and in a lighter weight.
“It’s Madison, no one is supposed to notice me,” is what this fine gent told us when we inquired about his ensemble. So true. On the streets of Madison, anything goes. You never know what interesting outfits you are going to come across.
What trend are we seeing here: Hmmm… military?
What to take away: Don’t be afraid to be adventurous. In this city you will be greeted with a smile and fit right in.
While most trends start on the runway and then find their way to the streets, it’s not unheard of to go the other direction. Don’t be afraid to be creative! Let the streets be your runway.
